The Barral Method for chronic issues

What is the Barral Method?

The method is the fascia centered bodywork developed by the Barral Institute - covering all systems and structures of the body including muscles, joints, nerves and blood vessels and all their interconnections.

Who

Richard Dickson has been practicing as a manual therapist focusing on the fascial, soft tissues of the body in London for 20 years and now living locally is offering treatments at The Open Door.

With a background in movement as a Pilates instructor and fascial work with structural integration and myofascial release I use all of that experience to help understand the body. We are also spirited animals with an emotional part that can affect our physical being and the method can also incorporate this aspect.

How does it work?

The treatment is effective because, firstly it takes the view of the whole body and all its connections not focusing on symptoms. In fact the less I know about the history to begin with the better as we then go by what we find without any potential bias.

The initial assessment is done by touch, listening with the hand to locate areas of abnormal tension in the tissues of the body. Any such tension can have an effect on the health of an associated organ for instance, perhaps restricting blood flow or neural pathways, or a physical limitation with say a joint.

The second reason is that it is your body that is making the adjustments. The same touch is used to release but the practitioner is just the facilitator, reading, following, nudging and never imposing. Anatomical precision, where and what is the key. In this way we aim to find the root cause of chronic ailments.

The third reason is the energy and attitude of the practitioner. There is a two way process of entrainment going on. We have to keep a calm, open, inquisitive, non-judgmental approach, without ego to allow your body to find its way and encourage that homeostasis. In this way it is very gentle but very effective.

What does it cover?

The scope is huge. I have done extensive training and have treated many complex cases of conditions often where conventional medicine shows no cause or other treatments have not lasted. It could be digestive issues, perhaps pelvic pain of any cause, joints, headaches, back, neck and shoulder. We also work with the cranium and brain with the Institute recently developing concussion protocols.

I am very curious, always learning and revel in investigating and problem solving any issue that I am presented with. I am still surprised at the connections that show within the body and the results that can be obtained.
